WHY CHOOSE A LICENSED BARBER?

A frequent question I am asked is about the difference between a Barber and a men's Hair Stylist.  Barbering is a profession that has existed for centuries, while, in comparison, men's Hair Styling is something relatively new.  A Barber should have a Barber's License, though not all of them do!  A men's Hair Stylist most likely holds a Cosmetology License.  Either a Barber or a men's Hair Stylist can create a particular hairstyle; however, each uses different training, tools, and techniques.
A Licensed Barber is a person highly-trained in how to cut men's hair, using different types of clippers, scissors, and thinning shears, and highly-trained in how to perform moustache, beard, and neck shaves using straight-edge razors.  A Licensed Barber must, of course, be able to cut all types of ethnic hair, and should also have instruction in scalp massage manipulations, rest facial massages, permanent hair waving, hair coloring, chemical hair relaxing, and hair styling, even basic haircuts for women.

To become a Licensed Barber, a person must complete 1500 hours of education in a school of barbering.  After finishing the coursework, the Barber-to-be must apply to the State Board where he or she resides and take the State Board licensing test.  They must successfully pass both the written and practical portions in order to obtain a Barber's License.

A Licensed Barber who wants to be successful in today's competitive market must continue to be educated and learn new methods, hair styles, and grooming products.  The combination of classic barbering knowledge and modern hair cutting techniques are an essential tool for a Licensed Barber to successfully create contemporary or trendy hair styles.

I am proud to be a Licensed Barber (in fact, I am currently Licensed in two states, Illinois and California) and humbly present myself to you as Jose Luis - Modern Barber in Chicago.
